Running Safety

Your personal safety is really important, whether that be when running with the club or alone. On this page is some useful guidance and things to consider to ensure everyone has a safe and positive running experience.

Additional guidance from England Athletics with other personal safety advice can be found on this Personal Running Safety Guidelines and Advice page.

If an accident occurs during a club night/club event, it is important you make the Chairman, Vice-Chairman or Club Secretary (see committee page) aware as soon as possible to ensure the correct process is followed to report this and any appropriate action taken. This includes any incidents for example: inappropriate/abusive behaviour or physical contact.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to any member of the committee.

  • Be aware of cracks, potholes and protruding tree roots on pavements.
  • Weather conditions such as rain, frost and snow/ice can make surfaces slippy.
  • Heavy leaf fall can cover pavements making it difficult to see the surface you are running on or where the pavement curb is.
  • Please take extra care on these surfaces. This might involve slowing down, walking or crossing over to the other side of the pavement if safer.
  • When running in the dark, please wear high vis clothing and/or a body torch to ensure you can see where you are going and are visible to others/traffic.
  • Please use pedestrian crossings and traffic lights on busy roads, especially in the dark.
  • When running with others, please be mindful of those around you and ensure you all have enough space.
  • If you are wearing headphones, bone conduction headphones are recommended as you can still hear everything around you including traffic, emergency vehicles and other warning noises.
